Aotearoa New Zealand flag design, Len Wicks
The left-hand portion represents the
unfurling fern frond (koru), reflecting the birth of the nation by Māori
migration.
The upper portion is black to represent
the national sports colour, the clear southern night sky and the
Southern Cross.
The lower portion uses the unique
indigenous colours of paua to represent the Pacific Ocean, and
incorporates a silver fern and kiwi to symbolise the shape of Aotearoa.
